WyldCards #14 – The Others

The WyldCards Society, as Alester called it, was a lose knit organization. In a way, it was the rebirth of an ancient order, and as such it inherited a great wealth of knowledge and physical resources. As well it had made use of the treasures in it possession, investing some of those resources to expand its coffers. Even though it has used those resources to benefit its members and its objectives to great expense, it has gained more than it has lost. As the oldest known society of its kindit has also kept detailed records of the other groups, as well as the free agents of which it is aware. In addition to the members of its various branches and cells, all of these resources are at the command of those who hold the Arcana, those who are ultimately responsible for the survival of the Society. Ace and Arra had been granted full access to these resources, access to the Trust, the Vault, the Study which had also been digitized, and to the roster of members which they might call ally.

Since Ace was not entirely comfortable with calling her Arra just yet he referred to her, even in his mind, as Ms Morr. Her support had been as invaluable to him as it had been to anyone, perhaps more so. As it let him reach further into the unknown, to hone-in on details which allowed for more accurate assessments. But he still needed to do everything in his power to get this one right, so Ace systematically studied the files and rosters. Every piece of information he could obtain, that might affect the outcome, could potentially change his viewings and reveal paths that had been hidden to them.

The Others were composed of people who had come to terms with their ability outside the reach of the WyldCards Society. Some had chosen to remain independent, some form small teams, but most had been recruited by other organizations. These groups had many different structures and agendas. Some were tried and tested allies of the WyldCards Society, others were fair weather friends, or held Quid Pro Quo relationships, A few were even quite mercenary in their dealings with others. Not all of them believed in the lore, and those who were sympathetic to it, or simply held it as a curiosity, were not entirely convinced about the literal translation of the narrative. Most believed that there were mysterious forces at play in the world, how could they not. But as far as sourcing their powers back to Nephilim, or committing themselves to an ancient fight against man’s greatest enemy, well they weren’t really prepared to believe in The Jinn as they had been presented by the Society. In fact, most couldn’t get past the fact that it sounded like an attempt to explain genies… wishes and miracles after all were a far cry from exotic supernatural abilities, they were godlike powers. Besides, many of these groups had other priorities, like concealing their kind from other humans.

Apparently, there had been a history of various government trying to control, create, or eliminate para-humans for years, para-human was of course the name the government used. The only good that came from this was that the government seemed just as eager to keep the potential existence of a human subspecies a secret. At least, during the cold war, when it was believed that such an asset would be invaluable to the country that harnessed it. After that, old habits and all, the government started to treat the whole subject like a myth… which really meant para-humans had become the purview of Black-Projects, there would be no more official interest in the matter, anything involving para-humans would be ridiculed as conspiracy in public. After all, there had never been a para-human uprising, and the governments seemed to considered such a thing to be an unlikely threat… they had chosen to instead manage individuals. Of course an uprising would have allowed them to wage war against para-humans, and openly take whatever actions they pleased, in the name of national security. But such a campaign would place a great burden on any governments’ resources. No, it was far easier to simply abduct the ones they had interest in, and hold them in secret facilities. The real Area 51, for instance, was such a research facility, for captive para-humans. A number of groups sprung up to counter these policies, each with their own approach. Then, somewhere along the way, para human mercenary groups appeared. Creating a new resource for certain branches of the government to exploit, and in turn benefiting from their protection… in the same way a vicious dog receives protection from its master. of course, all of this also gave birth to criminal organizations, though really its just one organization which happens to operate under different names in different areas.

During his research, Ace came upon a pair of locals, calling themselves Double Down. A male and female with the power to replicate themselves and move instantly from one point to the next. Believed to be twins, and thought to share a strong psychic link. The possible true nature of their power… Bi-Location. Trained in various martial arts, swordsmanship and staff fighting. The male carries a katana, and the female uses a bo-staff or kali sticks. In their youth they took work as lookouts, and sometimes resorted to thievery to get by. However, they have recently turned their skills towards bounty hunting, and occasionally take work as bodyguards. To date they have refused to join any known organization. Their discovery prompted Ace to reach out to them, after witnessing a possible future in which their skills proved quite useful. No sooner had he made contact, than Liza completed her training. While she and Leo practiced acting in tangent, Ace and Arra went to meet with the these new potentials. Before long it would be time to move.
